Split system air conditioners are tried and true, with many Australian homes opting for them over other systems such as ducted air conditioning. These systems are cost effective and can come with a number of different settings, making them easy to use. Not to mention, they are the more energy efficient alternative.

If you’re still not quite convinced, or simply want to know a little more, we’ve compiled a guide on the ins and outs of split system air conditioning just for you.

Everything You Need to Know About Split System Air Conditioning

What is Split System Air Conditioning?

A split system air conditioner consists of two separate components: an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. These systems are relatively easy to install as they don’t require any extensive ductwork, and are known for being both quiet and energy efficient.

The Outdoor Unit

This part of the air conditioner is known as the condenser and contains the fan, compressor, heat exchange coils and the circuit board. A refrigerant gas is pumped through the condenser, where the heat is expelled by a propeller fan and the gas is cooled and vaporised to form a liquid. This refrigerant liquid is then transferred to the evaporator coils that can be found within the indoor unit.

The Indoor Unit

The indoor unit is specifically designed to draw in the hot air from its surroundings, before passing it over a series of evaporator coils. During this process, the heat is absorbed by the refrigerant liquid within the evaporator coils transferring it back to a gas, while the now cool air is dispersed back out into the room. The refrigerant gas is then circulated back to the condenser to begin the cycle again.

Why Choose a Split System Air Conditioner?

Split system units actually tend to be the most popular choice for air conditioning in Australian homes.

This is for a number of different reasons:

  • They are able to be installed in almost any room.
  • New units can be installed relatively quickly.
  • Most split system units are cost-effective and easy to maintain.
  • They are generally quiet to run and are more energy efficient than their ducted counterparts.

Choosing the Right Unit For You

So, you now know what they are and why so many Australians choose to go for a split system unit, but how do you know which one is best for you? There are actually a few different factors that should be considered when choosing your perfect split system air conditioning unit. First and foremost being the size of the unit versus the size of the room.

Generally the size and layout of the room you are looking to cool will be the biggest indicator of the unit needed. The ceiling height, the insulation, and even the location and size of any windows or glass doors can all play a role in the selection process.

It is also important to note whether the sun directly hits the space you’re wanting to cool. Naturally, the more light that hits the room the hotter it will be, making it more difficult to maintain the set temperature. This might mean you need a larger system.
